Manistee High School Choir
2009-2010

The Manistee High School Choir is offered to any, but is especially designed for students wishing to perform in an excellent vocal ensemble.  The choir has a history of excellence extending back to the days of Mrs.Caro through the work of Mrs. Helge, a fortunate state that we shall build upon. Skills to be developed include proper technique leading to beautiful tone, understanding of written music, and awareness of the historical or wider view of each work. The final goal is beauty in performance: the "Aha!", or aesthetic, experience.

Grading
Students may earn ten points each day for demonstrating good work habits and polite behavior towards the teacher and other students.  Turn-ins requiring parent signature, like the one for this syllabus, will be worth 50 points, decreasing by day from the date they are due.
Concerts will be worth 250 points each, and festival performances 350.
Points will also be earned for written work, tests and quizzes.

Absences
Daily class points will still be given if the absence/tardy is excused.

Concerts
Here are our scheduled performances for 2009-2010:
Thursday, December 17 7:00 pm Christmas Concert
Thursday, February 4 All Day Solo and Ensemble Festival (Ludington)
April 16-18 8pm Musical (not required)
Wednesday, May 5 7 pm Talent Show (not required)
Monday, May 17 7 pm Spring Concert

Please add these dates to your family calendar.  Students will be expected to attend except in extreme emergency, severe illness or family funeral, in which case a note or phone call to the teacher is expected (before the event, if possible).  Unavoidable scheduling conflicts require two weeks’ notice to be excused.

Along these lines, an excused absence will include no grading penalty, but an unexcused absence may change the term grade from an “A” to a “D”… Please be thoughtful about your concert attendance!

Making up points
If you would like to raise your grade, there are numerous possibilities to do so.  See me to discuss options that fit your learning/make-up needs.

Solo and Ensemble Festival
Students are encouraged to participate in this excellent opportunity to prepare a solo and perform for an adjudicator.  Details will be given by note and on Moodle, as will all other announcements.

Have a great year!

Sincerely,

Ms. Joy Smith
